Sheffield Wednesday secured their first signing of the Garry Monk era earlier this week, and now they are close to making more, according to manager Garry Monk, who was speaking in his pre-match press conference.
What’s he said?
The Owls signed Argentinian winger Manuel Hidalgo from Italian Serie C side Triestina following a successful trial period on Wednesday evening.
And Monk has since provided a confidence boost over the prospect of adding more members to the squad before the window slams shut at the end of January.
He said:
“We are down the line with a few situations. Nothing concrete. Nothing signed and sealed.
“We have definitely progressed down the line a bit further with a few options but still nothing concrete to tell you.
“We want to try and bring in the right type of player in. It can’t just be a number or body.“It has to be the right type of player that I feel can help the group we already have.”
Time running out
It is no secret that Wednesday need and want a new striker, the manager has made that very clear publicly, but the winter transfer window is a notoriously hard market to operate in.
Which is why the club are left looking at loan signings rather than any permanent deals involving big fees and wages.
The devastating injury to top goalscorer Steven Fletcher has only ramped up their pursuit tenfold as they will be without his services for the next two months, a significant portion of what is left in the season, given they currently sit in the playoffs.
However, these remarks from Monk offer some encouragement that the situation could soon change as he suggests that talks with targets have progressed down the line.
Whose Line Is It Anyway: Roy Keane, Graeme Souness or Adrian Durham?
Connor Wickham is one potential incoming after the Daily Mail reported Wednesday’s interest in their former two-time loan ace, although it remains to be seen if he is indeed one of his targets.
And in other news, Wednesday have rejected advances for this Carlos Carvalhal mistake…
