An update has emerged on Leeds transfer target Yangel Herrera, regarding Manchester City’s valuation of the midfielder.

According to The Telegraph, Leeds United target Yangel Herrera is a player on Manchester City’s chopping block this summer. The Premier League champions are looking to raise funds and are willing to cash in on the midfielder for a fee in the region of £20m.

Crystal Palace, Southampton and West Ham are said to be interested in signing him, whilst Leeds have also been linked with a swoop for his signature this month.

Imagine him and Phillips

Victor Orta must sanction a swoop for Herrera as he could land a dream midfield for Marcelo Bielsa by partnering Kalvin Phillips with the Manchester City man.

The Venezuela international could be a terrific addition to the Argentine’s squad and bolster their chances of another successful season in the top-flight, which is why Orta must pounce on this opportunity to bring him in.

Bielsa often opted for a 4-1-4-1 last season, but also utilised a 4-4-1-1 variant and that is where the midfielder could slot in alongside Phillips.

Mateusz Klich’s performances were inconsistent and his dismal average WhoScored rating of 6.51 reflects this. This suggests that a replacement for the Poland international is needed heading into the 2021/22 campaign.

Herrera averaged a score of 6.84 across 42 appearances for Granada on loan in Spain, playing in La Liga and in the Europa League.

In 10 European matches, he averaged an eye-catching score of 7 whilst winning 3.3 tackles and interceptions per game. This shows that he has the quality to compete at the top level and, therefore, could be a shrewd signing.

Venezuelan football expert and journalist Carlos Ponte has lauded the midfielder as complete and elegant, praising his work rate across the pitch. 

He said: “In Venezuela, we’ve never had as complete a footballer Yangel – elegant in possession, tall, very physically imposing, good at bringing the ball out, good in the air, the right mentality, and a good head on his shoulders.

“He has a lot of energy and stamina, is great at providing cover and a true team player. He’s good at bringing the ball out with a certain degree of elegance.”

These quotes pair nicely with Herrera’s statistics at Granada to paint the picture of an impressive young talent who could pair with Phillips, 25, and create a strong midfield base for Leeds to build on.

At the age of 23, he still has plenty of time left to develop and improve as a player under Bielsa’s coaching, which means that him and Phillips could have the potential to be a dream pairing for many years to come at Elland Road.
